We are fully aware of the fact that cutting edge services like ours are not sustainable without research. Thus we operate a small but efficient research team to help us stay up front. Being UP FRONT in our major field of expertise means to cover structural changes of the central nervous system by a combination of conventional MR images and most modern computer based analysis. We have proven our expertise in the field of multiple sclerosis (List of publications), which of course affects primarily white matter. Recent findings, however, demonstrate a connection between the typical white matter lesions and changes in gray matter, like cortex and basal ganglia. It is part of our research to study this exciting interrelation with large groups of MS patients in multicenter studies.
In order to study lesions of white matter, semiautomatic measurements of their size, number and degree of contrast enhancement and also determination of their distribution pattern are employed. When correlated with quantitative changes of white and/or gray matter, precise statements about general or local degeneration of nervous tissue can be made.
